A Crypto ETN is a type of exchange-traded product designed to track the price of a specific cryptocurrency or a basket of cryptocurrencies.
Unlike ETFs, which typically hold underlying assets, an ETN is technically a debt instrument issued by a financial institution. Its value is linked to the performance of an underlying asset — in this case, a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.
When you invest in a Crypto ETN, you do not directly own the cryptocurrency itself. Instead, you hold a note issued by a provider that promises to replicate the performance of the referenced crypto asset, minus applicable fees.

In addition to the Total Expense Ratio (TER), which is the ongoing cost charged by the ETN issuer and built into the ETN’s price, Moneyfarm charges a £3.95 commission per trade, the same as any other equity trade on the London Stock Exchange.
An ETN (Exchange Traded Note) is a transferable security listed on a regulated market. It’s designed to track the performance of a specific underlying asset, like Bitcoin or Ethereum.
Not exactly. Because issuers hedge their exposure (for example by holding the underlying asset or using swaps or derivatives), they incur costs. These costs are covered by charging a management fee, reflected in the ETN’s price.
As a result, the ETN won’t match 100% of the underlying asset’s performance. Like ETFs, each ETN has a Total Expense Ratio (TER) that represents the ongoing cost to the investor.
ETNs trade on regulated exchanges and follow the exchange’s liquidity rules. Each issuer appoints one or more market makers to provide continuous bid and ask prices, helping ensure liquidity.
